Pune: Three school students were seriously injured after a car hit them about 40km from Pune in Mulshi taluka’s Shere village , on Friday evening. While one of them suffered a serious head injury and had to undergo surgery at a private hospital, the two others are being treated at a hospital in Lavale. The Paud police examined CCTV footage recovered from the area and tracked the car at Pimple Gurav.

“We have ascertained the identity of the suspect, who is a cab driver. We have detained him,” an officer said. He said that the accident happened when the students, Prem Chavan (13), Kartik Mavkar (14), and Samyak Chavan (14), all from Akole village in Mulshi taluka, were returning home after school.

All three are students of a private school in Shere village. “They were walking along the road when a cab heading towards Pune knocked them from behind. The students were flung into the air and fell,” the officer said.

The car driver did not stop after the accident. Locals initially took the boys to Paud primary health centre. As their injuries were serious, they were taken to a private hospital at Lavale.

“Prem Chavan, who suffered severe head injuries, was shifted to another private hospital in Pune, where he underwent surgery,” the officer said. He said prima facie investigations have revealed that the accident happened when the cab driver tried to overtake a car. He lost control and knocked the students.
