If there is a team eager for the calendar to flip to 2025, it’s the Toronto Blue Jays . 2024 was largely forgettable for Toronto, as the Blue Jays came into the season with high expectations to contend for the postseason, but they faltered early and never recovered. Injuries, a declining offence and a disappointing bullpen all led to the club finishing last in the American League East.

Their 88 losses were the most for the club since 2019. Advertisement But 2025 offers a blank canvas. With that in mind, here are three New Year’s resolutions for the Blue Jays to make 2025 a better year than the last one.

Make a significant move in free agency It’s immediately telling about Toronto’s offseason so far that making a splash in free agency has to be a 2025 goal. That’s because, despite having the financial means and interest in signing big-name free agents, thus far this winter, the Blue Jays haven’t landed any stars. They were reportedly in the mix for Juan Soto , Max Fried , Teoscar Hernández and, most recently, Corbin Burnes , before all of them signed elsewhere.

The only noteworthy free-agent deal the Blue Jays have made this offseason is signing right-handed reliever Yimi García , who the club brought back on a two-year, $15 million contract. Bringing García back makes sense for the Blue Jays, who need to rebuild a depleted bullpen, but his addition doesn’t move the needle for a restless fan base. Even with several of the top names on The Athletic’s Big B.
