The flights that are the best value for money for Australians and those which sting you the most for for the shortest journey have been revealed.Number crunchers have ranked Australia's top 10 most popular international flights based on their average cost per minute.And the best value trip for Aussies was Perth to Singapore.READ MORE: The key things to know about visiting Paris on the cheapIt came out on top with an average cost per minute of just $1.41, according to the survey by Money.com.au.It's around the middle of the pack in terms of flight duration, meaning travellers on this route can easily reach south-east Asia, enjoying both good value relative to other routes and a manageable travel time. Of course it helps if you live in Perth.Meanwhile, Melbourne to Singapore comes in second for value, with a cost per minute of $1.78, followed by Perth to Denpasar in Bali, with a cost per minute of $1.96. Meanwhile, at the other end of the scale, Brisbane to Singapore has the highest cost per minute, coming in at $3.18.READ MORE: If you're not regularly cleaning your suitcase between trips, you might want to reconsiderMoney.com.au Finance Expert, Sean Callery, says many travellers are looking at ways beyond the obvious to get the best value possible from their trip."Considering total cost together with the journey time offers travellers a fresh dimension for measuring value for money," he said."The research shows that in some cases opting for a longer journey will make your dollars go further too."Singapore is a good example, as flights there from Melbourne and Sydney represent very good value on average based on cost per minute, compared to flying across the ditch to Auckland."Indeed the Melbourne to Auckland route offers the best value for flights to New Zealand, with an average cost per minute of $2.31, while Sydney to Auckland has a higher cost per minute of $2.74. The results were calculated by ranking the top 10 most popular international flights by the number of outbound passengers in May 2024 from the Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE).The average cost of the five lowest fares for a direct flight to each destination across Australia's major airlines: Qantas Airways, Jetstar, Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand were used.Flight dates between 01-31 October 2024 and divided the total fare by the total flight duration.
