September may be looming around the corner but let’s not wish away the summer just yet. Make the most of the last couple of weeks of the school break with a scenic walk in the countryside . We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to scenic walks on our doorstep and each one offers something different from the next.

But if you’re after magical woodland, waterfalls and mysterious ruins, then this route in Lancashire might just appeal to you. A stone’s throw away from Darwen Tower is Roddlesworth Woods. It's a beautiful area of woodland with the River Roddlesworth flowing through it and among the trees you’ll find hidden waterfalls and mysterious ruins.

Head south along the river from the reservoirs and you’ll come across Mill Lane Waterfall, which cascades down between the trees. Roddlesworth Waterfall (Image: Lancs Live/Jude Tolson) Roddlesworth Waterfall can be found further south and although it’s not as tall as Mill Lane Waterfall, it’s quite impressive after heavy rainfall.

It’s not just waterfalls that you’ll find in these woods, they're also home to the remains of Hollinshead Hall, a manor house owned by the wealthy Hollinshead family. The house has all but disappeared, but the well-preserved remains of the hall�.
