While many Australians will soon start packing their bags to visit family and friends over the Christmas holiday period, a new travel trend is quietly emerging. According to findings from American Express’ latest Amex Trendex survey, nearly 60 per cent of Australian adults are ready to put themselves first and indulge in a “me-cation” this festive season. For the uninitiated, a me-cation is exactly what it sounds like — a holiday designed purely for you.

It’s a chance to escape the chaos of daily life, press pause on obligations and focus on personal wellbeing. Whether that means soaking in the tranquillity of a wellness retreat, unwinding at a luxurious spa, or trekking solo through a peaceful hiking trail, the ultimate goal of a me-cation is to recharge on your own terms. In fact, the data reveals that younger Australians, in particular, are embracing this trend the most, with 60 per cent of gen Z and a notable 67 per cent of millennials saying they’re keen to find their zen over the upcoming Christmas break by seeking out serene sanctuaries where they can enjoy some solitude.

So, while many of us scramble to buy last-minute gifts whilst rushing from one family feast to the next this silly season, don’t be surprised when a younger family member fails to show up. Chances are they have deliberately chosen to gift themselves something equally meaningful: time to breathe..
