There's a town in Herefordshire that's known for its 'love affair with words'. Ledbury has a reputation for being a 'poetry town' due to the fact that the likes of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and John Masefield fell in love with this beautiful area. This is reflected each year in the international Ledbury Poetry Festival.

But you can go any time of year and feel inspired by its 'pretty jumble' of historic architecture, secret alleyways and famous cobbled lane. Set around a stunning stilted 17th-century Market House, you'll find independent shops along the high street but it's good to wander up the cobbles of Church Street to discover the secrets of time gone by. Here you'll find a Painted Room that dates back to the 16th century when it was fashionable to recreate tapestries in paint on the walls of gentry homes.

Further along here, you'll find St Michael’s and All Angels Church where a discoloured painting had hung for more than 100 years before it was discovered to be The Last Supper by Renaissance master Titian.
