A traffic-free trail along a former railway line in the Peak District has been described as a “great family day out ”. The Monsal Trail, which runs between Blackwell Mill and Bakewell, can be used by walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users. The 8.
5mile route passes through the impressive limestone dales and there are some incredible views along the way. It’s a completely free-to-use trail and you can bring your own bikes with you, or hire them at several locations on the route. A highlight of the trail is the Headstone Viaduct, which offers breathtaking views across the landscape.
As well as amazing views, the trail features four railway tunnels which are around 400m long and lit during normal daylight hours. One of the old stations, Hassop, has reopened as a cafe and serves breakfasts, lunches, sweet treats and wood-fired pizza.
