The landlords of a historic but "down to earth" village pub in Godstone, Surrey, have been honored with a unique award from their loyal patrons. Mark Cullinan, 57, his wife Allison, 56, who have run The Hare and Hounds for two decades, received a tongue-in-cheek blue plaque dubbing them the "best landlords in the world." After taking over The Hare and Hounds in 2004, the couple have spent 20 years caring for the site and running the pub.

Despite surviving two recessions and a pandemic, the pub continues to thrive with happy customers. The blue plaque, now fixed to the front of the pub, reads: “To the best landlords in the world. A proper nice little boozer.

Mark and Ali Cullinan. Running the Hare and Hounds, Godstone since 4th May 2004 (when they’re not on holiday).” Responding to the plaque, Mark said: “Godstone is a lovely village in a beautiful location with a real sense of community.

So when the previous tenants moved on we leapt at the chance to take on the lease for The Hare and Hounds. We haven’t looked back. It’s been a great 20 years, a real joy to run the pub .

The locals are lovely and have become good friends.” READ MORE: The incredible viaduct walk just 30 minutes from Surrey ending at 'lovely country pub' Surrey's 'best' 8 Indian restaurants and takeaways shortlisted for prestigious 2024 award The couple realised during the pandemic that they felt down beat not being able to welcome regulars every day.
