We're always told to take out travel insurance just in case and there are plenty of stories of travellers caught out for a variety of reasons. From medical emergencies to natural disasters, international travellers face a host of potential complications. And sadly some destinations require extra care and planning.

A recent study by Forbes Advisor compared 60 international cities across seven key metrics, and has revealed the least and most risky cities for travellers. Four of the top 15 safest cities for tourists are in Europe, including Zurich, Switzerland; Copenhagen, Denmark; Amsterdam, Netherlands; and Frankfurt, Germany Toronto, Canada, had a score of 13.6 out of 100.

It has the best travel safety rating from the State Department (level 1, exercise normal precautions). It's fourth lowest for infrastructure security risk, reflecting availability and quality of city infrastructure, and seventh lowest health security risk, reflecting the level and quality of healthcare services and infrastructure. High on the travel list for Australians already, Tokyo is considered the second safest city for tourists with a score of 10.
