Ahead of International Lefthanders Day on August 13, some lovely lefties tell us what it’s like to be a southpaw in a right-handers’ world Lefthanders Day, August 13 I am a proud left-hander. I wasn’t always proud. In school I hated writing with my left hand, especially when pens came into play and we learned cursive.

My left hand dragged across the page, smudging the ink. My handwriting was appalling. Notebooks with a spine? My enemy.

Fountain pens? An absolute no. Happily, I wasn’t of the generation where the left-handedness was discouraged as it was thought sinful or sinister. We all have family members with tales of having their hands tied behind their back, or of being slapped with a ruler.
