In 2019, the executive director of projects and partnerships for the Great Barrier Reef Foundation set up the largest reef restoration research and development program in the world. The 350 coral reef scientists, marine biologists and engineers involved in the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program were tasked with working out how to scale reef restoration to make it “smarter, stronger, faster and cheaper”, Fyffe says.
