As we approach the peak of summer, there is never a better time to explore somewhere in the sunshine and make the most of the fabulous weather , however long the heat will last. Summer, for many, is all about the beaches or the nature reserves for long walks with plenty to see. In our region we are blessed with a number of different harbours and marinas.

Bristol’s Harbourside is full of iconic features and things to do, Portishead ’s Marina is beautiful and Clevedon Harbour offers a peaceful escape. Less than an hour away from Bristol , on the other side of the River Severn, sits the small town of Lydney . Located within Gloucestershire’s Forest of Dean, the small town has roughly 10,000 people living in it (according to the 2021 census).

With links back to Roman times, the harbour was the subject of a regeneration project to improve road access and fund additional information boards. The harbour sits on the River Severn and harbour locks help protect the harbour, and oncoming boats, from the second highest tidal range in the world.

In December 2023, the locks were refurbished and refitted after failing in an open position. An iconic feature of the harbour are the Standing Stones, a group of six large stones that were placed as part of the regeneration. It forms a compass with let.
