The serene bay of Ayvalik (Image: Getty) The Turkish port town of Ayvalık is often overlooked by tourists, but it has hidden depths that many are unaware of. A few streets back from the waterfront is a stunning village. This alternative holiday destination offers a huge amount.

It’s a town where tradition meets the classic beach vibe, basking in the warmth of the North Aegean Sea. You can even see the Greek island of Lesbos from its coastline. Many of the old stone houses have been converted into boutique hotels while the Greek Orthodox churches have been turned into mosques.

This town has a unique charm like no other. There are several historic churches within the town, another prominent one being the Ayios Yannis Church. This Greek Orthodox church includes amazing frescoes and offers a cultural insight into the town's multicultural history.
