Newcastle United forward Harvey Barnes spoke about putting himself in the "shop window" when describing his unwanted role of super sub under Eddie Howe. Barnes has now netted six times after coming off the bench for Newcastle with his goal against Nottingham Forest two weeks ago an example of just what an impact player he has been since arriving from Leicester City for £38million in summer 2023. Despite admitting he was conscious of the fact he needed to give Barnes game-time, it feels like dropping Joelinton or Anthony Gordon is a non-starter after the victory at the City Ground.
Joelinton has been nudged into the front three to accommodate a strong midfield with even Sandro Tonali unable to get a start in the 3-1 win last time out. We could well see Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock and Bruno Guimaraes start as the midfield trio against the Hammers with Gordon, Joelinton and Alexander Isak as the front men. Bearing in mind, Barnes has history in this fixture, Howe may see him as the ideal star to keep him in reserve.
Only last season Barnes entered the pitch with 67 minutes on the clock against the Hammers with United 3-2 down. His late double at St James' Park helped Newcastle pull off a remarkable 4-3 win which helped breathe life into what was looking like an ailing season. Speaking about his situation Barnes told reporters after the game against Forest: "I want to play every game from the beginning.
When I'm not playing, I'm always going to be disappointed and frustrated. "B.
