Anna Sarjeant questions her own existence at The Ace hotel in Sydney Location: Tickling the fringes of Surry Hills, within walkable distance of Chinatown and Capitol Theatre. Perfect For: Short stays in the city, for business and/or pleasure. First Impressions: I am initially a little thrown to find the man who sat in the seat next to me on the plane, is now standing beside me in the hotel foyer, which is an edgy mix of exposed brick, tiled flooring and some rather fetching knick-knacks.

It feels very “New York loft apartment”. Ignoring the fact I may have found myself in The Truman Show , check-in is seamless and I find the staff both diligent and welcoming. In fact, I usually shuffle through check-in with simple pleasantries and a few head nods, but they were so charming, I let go of all inhibitions and inquire about nice places to eat alone - where I won’t “feel like a loser”.

Their recommendations are vast and detailed, and they make a point of saying I’m not a loser, which is nice..
