S hoppers once flocked to the treasure house that was Whiteley’s department store from across the globe. When it opened in 1911 it was the world’s largest emporium, with attractions including a theatre and a rooftop golf course, and it’s USP being the ability to procure anything from a pin to an elephant. Now, after a five-year redevelopment by Finchatton and the joint venture investment partners MARK and CC Land, costing £3 billion, the west London landmark has been attracting the attention of international property seekers — drawn to its 21st-century reincarnation as the last word in luxury living.
The Whiteley, as the new development is named, includes 139 dwellings, from studios to five-bedroom flats and a collection of larger apartments and penthouses, ranging from £1.5-£40 million. Residents have their own sports hall with padel, volleyball and badminton courts.
Also behind the grade II listed façade, which has been restored by Foster + Partners, will be the 109-room Six Senses Hotel. The amenities here, including a spa, swimming pool and gym, are also open to homeowners. There’s a grocery stocking service, so that residents can return from holiday to a full fridge.
And child and pet care on tap too..
