There are 92 counties in total covering Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland, and only a handful of them are without any cities whatsoever. A town can only be granted city status by a monarch in the UK, and back in the 19th century, many towns were elevated to city status during Queen Victoria’s reign. Belfast, Birmingham, Sheffield, Bradford and Nottingham were all granted the status by the Queen.
