Friday, November 29, 2024 Thailand’s airports will enhance international travel with innovative facial recognition technology, streamlining passenger processing from December 1. Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) has announced that it will roll out facial recognition technology at six major airports for international flights starting December 1. This biometrics-based system will be implemented at Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Don Mueang, Hat Yai, Phuket, and Suvarnabhumi airports.

The new technology is designed to streamline the passenger journey, reducing the time spent at security checkpoints from three minutes to just one minute for registered travelers. Passengers can register for the biometric system through two convenient methods: either at traditional check-in counters with airline staff or by using self-service Common Use Self-Service (CUSS) kiosks. During the registration process, travelers will have their facial data scanned and stored in the system.

Once registered, travelers will be able to use Common Use Bag Drop (CUBD) machines to check in their luggage without the need to present boarding passes or passports. In line with the Personal Data Protection Act, AOT will ensure that all biometric data is deleted within 48 hours of registration. Initially launched for domestic flights on November 1, the facial recognition service will now extend to international flights, according to Bangkok Post.
