A Teesside barber is celebrating the decade which brought us curtains and frosted tips with a brand new venture. Jordan Jackson opened up his own shop on Tuesday, right in the heart of Middlesbrough town centre on Bedford Street. He's already enjoying styling the barnets of loyal clients and is also hoping to attract new customers, particularly students at Teesside University .
The 30-year-old dad-of-two, from Middlesbrough , started off in the trade through an apprenticeship at Chaps, in Linthorpe , and later rented a chair as a freelance at The Lyon's Den, in Marske . A 90s child, he decided to style Jackson's Barbers on the decade which is seeing a comeback in fashion and hairstyling trends. "I have been doing hair for about seven years and always wanted to own my shop," said Jordan.
"When I found out my girlfriend was pregnant with a second child I decided now was the right time to open my own shop." He set up the business, on the unit formerly occupied by Impact Training and Employment, with the help of a grant from the Prince's Trust Enterprise programme. It's decorated in 90s colours like pinks, blues and yellows, along with retro and concept art from movies from the decade and a huge graffiti mural.
The art includes a Space Jam design which was gifted to Jordan by a former customer and associate of the original 90s animated film. Jordan said he's noticed many 90s hairstyles are coming back in style, with younger customers particularly inspired by 'dos of the decade su.
