George Dillon, 19, lost control of his Volkswagen Golf on a crest in the road in Romsey, near Southampton, and smashed into a large tree. His Apple device automatically dialled the emergency number to alert authorities that he had been in 'a serious car crash and was not responding' to his phone.

But the police did not initially attend the scene when operators logged there was 'no direct request made' and nothing 'distinctive' could be heard in the background with no sounds of distress or disturbance. The police had called back but it went straight to voicemail and the department's intelligence team 'drew a blank' attempting to identify the caller. Officers were called to the scene.
