Pune: Citizens have been facing problems in getting birth and death certificates from the Pune Municipal Corporation due to technical faults in the Civil Registration System (CRS). Dr Neena Borade, chief of the public health department at PMC, told TOI that the civic body has been regularly corresponding with the respective state and central govt agencies regarding the technical issues at the CRS. Last year, the civic body had decentralised the system of birth-death certificate issuance at ward level to ensure easy access for citizens.

However, she added, now technical fault at the CRS making it difficult for citizens to get these certificates. "To ease the burden on the system, we have instructed all PMC-run maternity homes to start uploading documents required to issue a birth certificate through their respective institutional login ID. This was earlier happening at the ward level.

With this, we have decentralised the process to upload the documents and avoid added pendency. We would start with our own maternity homes first as a pilot project. For those who want the death certificate immediately for last rites purposes, insurance or transporting the body for funeral, the death pass would be issued by the PMC.
