Sweden has announced that it has chosen Embraer's C-390 Millennium as its new tactical transport aircraft, deepening its relationship with the Brazilian planemaker. Sweden has become the latest European customer of the C-390 and the first in Northern Europe. Sweden opts for Embraer C-390 Millennium The Swedish Ministry of Defense announced its decision to procure the highly versatile Embraer C-390 Millennium on Friday, becoming the sixth European country to do so.

The NATO-configured plane will have interoperability with other NATO operators, which will include Portugal, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. Bosco Da Costa Junior, President & CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, noted the C-390's "unparalleled versatility, reliability, and performance", adding, "Embraer is honored with this selection by Sweden. After several European NATO countries selected the C-390, this decision is a testimony that this multi-mission aircraft represents a tremendous operational capability upgrade compared to previous generation tactical transport aircraft.

" The country has been seeking a replacement for its aging fleet of six Lockheed Martin C-130H airlifters, but has not disclosed the number of airframes it will acquire as part of this deal. At one point it seemed that Sweden was set on acquiring the C-130J-30 Super Hercules as a replacement, but has ultimately opted for the Brazilian-made C-390 Millennium. Embraer heralded the deal as a "new chapter in Brazil-Sweden relations" .
