FARGO — Mental health experts are highlighting recent findings from the U.S Surgeon General's office that says parents are in a mental health crisis. They say the stress of raising children is at an unsafe level for parents.
Experts say the fact that we're talking about mental health is a step in the right direction. People are becoming more comfortable with voicing their mental health struggles, and that can lead the way to help solve the problem, they said. Experts point out that social media plays a large role in the stress parents experience.
They say it's a safety concern as more people have access to children through online platforms. "We really have a comparison culture, and social media has really propelled that and so there's all this exposure to people's seemingly perfect moments without any exposure to the struggle behind them," Kayla Salathe, an integrated health therapist at Sanford, said. Experts say parents should focus on their mental health in order to model healthy behaviors to their children.
