Three own-brand supermarket champagnes have beaten a luxury producer in the annual festive taste test by Which? The consumer group asked each of Britain’s supermarket chains to nominate a non-vintage champagne costing up to £50. A panel of four independent wine experts blind-tasted the selection to uncover the best bubbly. The panel’s highest score of 82 per cent went to the Tesco Finest Premier Cru Brut, which costs £25.

It beat Moët & Chandon’s Brut Impérial, which scored 77 per cent, even though it was nearly double the price at £44 a bottle.
