Chronic lower back pain – also known as lumbago, is a common disorder that affects the muscles, nerves, and bones of the lower back. It can feel like a dull ache or a sudden sharp pain. Most people who suffer from pain look for many treatment options which include exercise, medication, and alternate management.

However, a simple online solution can also do the trick. According to a new study, online yoga classes can ease chronic low back pain even before moving on to painkillers. “Attending yoga classes in person can be challenging,” said senior researcher Dr.

Robert Saper, chair of the wellness and preventive medicine at Cleveland Clinic. The research, published in the journal JAMA Open Network said those taking virtual yoga classes had a sixfold greater reduction in pain compared with those not assigned to the online sessions. The online yoga students also had a nearly threefold improvement in their back-related function.

“This research shows that a virtual yoga class program can be a safe and effective therapeutic option for the treatment of chronic low back pain,” Saper said in a Cleveland Clinic news release. How was the study conducted? For the study, researchers assigned 140 people with chronic low back pain to either participate in a virtual live-streamed yoga class for two months or continue with their usual medical care. In the classes, yoga instructors delivered a program designed especially for virtual delivery to treat people with low back pain.
