A group of students with special educational needs has completed a firefighter’s course. The programme, run by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, is designed to promote personal resilience, improve wellbeing, strengthen relationships and build healthy communities. Young people with special educational needs and disabilities (Send) take part in firefighter simulated exercises and activities.
On Friday, 12 students aged 14 to 15 from St Anthony’s School, Chichester, took part in a pass out parade at Bognor fire station, which was attended by the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Philippa Gogarty. They have all worked hard and should be very proud of themselves.
“From running hoses and squirting water to working as part of a team, this experience and the skills they have learnt this week will stay with them and support them throughout their lives. “Our targeted education team runs a range of courses which make a real difference to young people and their communities. "The courses combine practical drill yard skills and first aid training with team building challenges and communication activities which help set them up for the future and improve their confidence and self-esteem.
