Back in June, the planned reboot of the “Street Fighter” franchise hit a stumbling block when Australian filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou (“Talk To Me”) exited the project. Now a new report from indicates that “Bad Trip” helmer Kitao Sakurai has now signed on to helm the film at Legendary and Capcom. Scheduling is said to be partly to blame for the Philippou brothers exiting as the studio aims to begin shooting the movie soon while the brothers are currently at work shooting A24’s “Bring Her Back” in Australia.

Both of them have expressed their love for the “Street Fighter” franchise in past interviews. The long enduring fighting video game got a new installment with “Street Fighter VI” last year and began life with the 1987 arcade game. With 1991’s “Street Fighter II” it became a pop culture icon and mainstay.

The property was previously adapted both as the infamous 1994 film with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, Kylie Minogue and Ming-Na Wen, and the 2009 “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” with Kristin Kreuk..
