The Department for Work and Pensions says state pensioners could in line for 13 freebies or discounts worth nearly £9,000 in August. The DWP State Pension is a gateway benefit allowing pensioners to open themselves up for further benefits. But there's a sting in the tail for many right now, after the new Labour Party government axed the £300 Winter Fuel Payment.

Winter Fuel Payments were previously available to everyone who is above state pension age in the UK. But new Labour Party Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed the rules are changing in England and Wales so only those on means-tested benefits including Pension Credit will be eligible. Winter Fuel Payments are worth up to £300, depending on your living arrangements.
