Students from St. Patrick Academy had the fortunate opportunity recently to tour the Lake County Courthouse, led by Commissioner Barry Shullanberger. On Friday, Sept.

27, Shullanberger led seven Academy students to different departments within the courthouse to demonstrate the organization and workings of county government. Departments included the Sheriff’s office, Probation, Veterans Affairs, Planning and the Treasurer’s office, among others. In the Clerk’s office, students were able to see the prepared ballots ready for the upcoming election, as well as a test of the machine that would count the ballots.

They were also able to observe the nearly 200-year-old deed registries and how the systems are now stored on microfilm. Students enjoyed their time with Commissioners Shullanberger and Williams in the commissioners’ meeting room, learning about their jobs and how they work with community members to take care of the county. They ended the day with a tour of the courtroom and testing out the jury box, learning about their civic duty and responsibilities as jurors when they are older.

St. Patrick Academy Students would like to extend a special thank you to Commissioner Shullanberger for the time he took to organize the departments and lead the tour..
