Friday, August 23, 2024 On August 22, 2024, SriLankan Airlines, in collaboration with Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka), celebrated a significant occasion by hosting a unique tour for a group of young Buddhist monks, or ‘Samaneras,’ at the Bandaranaike International Airport. This special event, marking the airline’s 45th anniversary on September 1, 2024, provided these monks—ranging from five years old and up from Ganewatta Purana Rajamaha Viharaya in Waskadubedda, Deldoova, Kalutara—an inaugural experience aboard an aircraft. Accompanied by several revered Theros and volunteers from SriLankan Airlines, the young monks embarked on a unique educational journey through the airport.

They explored the various facilities, absorbing the bustling environment and operational intricacies of an international hub. Their exploration culminated in an up-close experience with a parked Airbus A320, where they learned about the technical and logistical aspects of aircraft operations, marking their first-ever exposure to the aviation world. The visit was further enriched with a ceremonial almsgiving (Dana) and the offering of pirikara, held in the airport’s Silk Route Arrival Lounge.
