This policy is part of a six-month trial program designed to stimulate Sri Lanka’s tourism industry by making it more accessible to international visitors. Currently, tourists are required to pay $50 for a visa, making this new initiative a significant incentive, especially as it aligns with the peak tourist season from December to mid-April.
The program is expected to attract a larger influx of visitors, helping to revitalize the sector after recent global travel disruptions. As of now, Sri Lanka has welcomed approximately 1.3 million tourists in 2024, with tourism revenue exceeding $1.
5 billion in the first half of the year—a remarkable 78% increase compared to the same period last year. The government is optimistic that this free visa initiative will help the country reach its goal of attracting around 2.5 million tourist visits by the end of the year.
