Introduction to Free Spirit Rewards Spirit Airlines is well known for its ultra-low-cost flights throughout the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Its Free Spirit loyalty program also offers some valuable sweet spots for savvy travelers. Joining Free Spirit offers several benefits, even for infrequent travelers. Here's what you should know about earning and redeeming points in the new Free Spirit frequent flyer program.

Earning Spirit Airlines points Spirit operates on a revenue-based system, so you'll earn and redeem Free Spirit points based on the cost of the ticket, minus taxes and fees — not on the distance flown. There are two types of points within Free Spirit: Redeemable points, and Status Qualifying Points (SQPs). You'll earn redeemable points more quickly than SQPs, and these are used to book award tickets.

SQPs can't be redeemed, and are used for tracking your progress toward elite status. Points aren't earned base.
