When it comes to tourism in Spain , there's no way you can't bring up Benidorm . Known as the "New York of the Mediterranean", the region located on Spain's eastern coast has been a tourist hotspot for decades and certainly the case for British tourists. Just halfway through 2024, the city welcomed a whopping 2.
7 million visitors, and according to Benidorm Travel Mart , most international visitors came from the UK. And it seems that some British tourists in Benidorm are really making a name for the destination—a "kitsch" one. An online discussion on Reddit's travel forum found people worldwide sharing the "trashiest, tackiest tourist trap cities worldwide," and Benidorm made the cut.
One user wrote: I love tacky, touristy kitsch and I'm tired of pretending I don't." They then asked fellow users to share destinations that they thought deserved to be in the discussion. The post generated over 2,900 comments from people slatting cities across the world, including the well-loved Benidorm, which was actually mentioned multiple times, reports the Daily Mail .
Another visited the hotspot in December. The Redditor said: "It was like an 80's zombie apocalypse movie - all neon and abandoned." A third user said: "Benidorm is fine if you ignore the small area with the p***** up Brits.
Go a few streets away from the strip, and it's fine." However, the comments made about the city weren't all bad. Many users actually defended the seaside resort that is known for its cheap prices.
