Studies showed a few years ago, that there were more than 3 million uninhabited houses in Kerala, that were simply left to decay. Besides, there are lots of two-storey houses in which old parents live on the ground floor. In such cases, extra income could be earned by renting out the upper floor.

Moreover, it is a great way to ensure that there is always someone in the house where old parents live. Jomon and Gifty wanted a house that gave them consistent income when they decided to build a house at Ullur in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. They constructed a two-storey house in the 5-cent plot they owned.

Each floor has been designed as separate houses with all the facilities. Meanwhile, the flat box structure is designed to suit the rectangular plot. The house in 2300 sqft has a car porch, sit-out, formal and family living areas, dining area, kitchen with a work area and two bedrooms.

The same facilities are arranged on the upper floor too. Besides, a separate staircase is built outside to access the upper floor without harming the privacy of the family members. The interiors designed in the open theme look and feel vaster.

The living-dining-kitchen areas are arranged as a single circuit. The minimal furnishing too helps in making the interiors look spacious. As a garden or landscape couldn’t be designed in the front yard due to space constraints, a quaint courtyard has been arranged in the dining area to add a charming dab of greenery.
