The fire was first reported just before midday today, with fire crews from Islington, Soho and Dowgate among those attending the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but pedestrians have been advised to avoid the area due to "the high volume of smoke". The legendary London landmark, which was the official residence of the Queen of England and home of Roman Catholic consorts between 1603 and 1692, is a historic building dating back to 1547.
