Singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves gave an update on her dog, Pepper, after the pup was bitten by a rattlesnake—saving her in the process. The 36-year-old shared a series of since deleted Instagram stories on Oct. 27, reassuring fans that Pepper is recovering at their Tennessee home and doing well after being bitten by the timber rattlesnake.

In an Instagram post Monday featuring a roundup of October photos, Musgrave included photos of Pepper looking under the weather, and lauded “brave dogs that save you from stepping on a rattlesnake you didn’t see on your back porch.” She initially mistook the reptile for a Copperhead, before realizing the snake was a rattler. Copperheads are venomous but their bites are rarely lethal.

Musgrave rushed Pepper to the animal hospital where the veterinarian distributed a dose of anti-venom. “The bite made her lethargic. Those who have Blue Heelers know they ain’t ever this calm,” she said, describing the dog’s breed.

“She’s home and sleeping a lot/on pain meds and getting lots of love,” Musgraves posted in the now expired Instagram stories. “Thank god for good dogs.” The Grammy-award winning musician shared another photo of the inside of Pepper’s mouth and the clear red mark on her snout where the rattlesnake struck.

“This is wild but the vet was showing me how the inside of her mouth and all down her neck is so bruised from that damn snakebite,” she wrote. Musgraves and her ex-husband, Ruston Kelly, adopted Pepp.
