Pune: The civic body ’s Environment Status Report (ESR) for 2023 has found that Shivajinagar is the most polluted area in the city, after studying the presence of particulate matter (PM) of different sizes to determine air quality. The data shows that PM2.5 and PM10 levels are the highest in this central location of the city.

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials said data from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research was used for the air pollution and quality analysis of ESR, and recorded at locations such as Pashan, Shivajinagar, Lohegaon, and Katraj. The officials added that vehicular population was one of the factors leading to the emissions of these pollutants. However, the state’s Economic Survey 2023-24, released on June 27, had said Swargate recorded the worst air quality index (AQI) level in Maharashtra, averaging at 140 micrograms per cubic metre (μg/m3) in the fiscal.

The ambient AQI in Swargate and Bhosari (92) was said to be “deteriorating”, with nitrogen oxide and PM10 levels extremely high.
