This powerful depiction, often referred to as the “Christ of Miracles,” was crafted in the 17th century by an anonymous African artist who was taken from present-day Angola and brought to Peru as a slave. Over the centuries, the image has become a symbol of hope and resilience for many, embodying the struggles and triumphs of the Afro-Peruvian community.
Each October, Lima transforms into a vibrant sea of purple as hundreds of thousands of devotees from diverse backgrounds come together to honor this sacred image. The annual religious procession, recognized as one of the largest in the world, takes place over several days, specifically on October 18, 19, and 28. Streets and boulevards are adorned with purple decorations, reflecting the color associated with the Lord of Miracles, as participants march in a deep expression of faith and unity.
