Her Majesty is said to be devastated. My heart goes out to her. Jack Russells are very special little dogs.

I remember when my Jack Russell, Mars , was run over by a car while on holiday in Cornwall back in 2013. I found him by the roadside, looking from a distance almost as though he were asleep on the sofa at home, but then, up close, a tragic little thing with lifeless eyes and a dark red pool of blood under his head. Of course, if the rational part of my brain had been working it would have informed me that this was not a child or a fellow human and it was therefore only a minor tragedy. Besides, he was getting on: one way or another he would have gone to join the great squirrel hunt in the sky sooner rather than later. But there was nothing rational about it: I was utterly distraught.

I wailed like a child, utterly bereft, my own children aghast and baffled at their normally composed mother's loss .
