Pune: Sanjiv Bajaj , chairman and managing director of Bajaj Finserv , lamented on Friday that the younger workforce in India was spending significant time on social media and "getting comfortable" when they should be working harder. "You can see a number of business leaders saying that they are not getting enough people to work for them. A lot of youngsters are spending four to five hours daily on their smartphones on social media.
They do not want to go and work. Unfortunately, most work is hard work, there is no easy work. So, in a way, people are getting comfortable when they should be working harder," he said on Friday while speaking at the Asia Economic Dialogue in Pune.
"I will not get into the debate of how many hours in a week (laughs). But our job is to enable the youth and attract them to build their own careers as well," he added. Quoting from his earlier conversation with veteran scientist Raghunath Mashelkar, he said that some pockets in Pune, such as Pashan, can be touted as Silicon Valley with a significant number of startups, and research institutes.
There is no doubt about the availability of talent pool in India, but stakeholders need to look at scaling it up to the next level where the country's productivity will go up, Bajaj said. "For businesses that need five inputs to create an output, one of them is skilled manpower. If it is not available in sufficient quantity, I can keep complaining or do something about it," he said, adding that the govt and corpo.
