Prayagraj : Sangam city may soon get UP's third women's jail ( Nari Bandi Niketan ) that would be able to accommodate 500 plus inmates. So far only the state capital and Bareilly have women's jail. "The authorities of Naini Central Jail have sent a proposal to the state govt to set up Nari Bandi Niketan adjacent to the central jail after holding a series of discussions with senior state prison authorities," senior superintendent (Naini Central Jail) Rang Bahadur Patel told TOI.

He said the Nari Bandi Niketan could come up on the old women's barrack campus that has adequate space. As per the proposal, the prison would have an all-women staff including superintendent and warders. It would also have facilities like modern kitchen, study centre and a medical & health unit for the women inmates and their kids.

Earlier, the Naini jail had four separate barracks to keep women inmates, including both undertrials and convicts. Later around 120 women inmates, including 55 convicts, were shifted to the women's barracks of Prayagraj District Jail. A senior jail official said, prisons across state have 1,090 female convicts and 2,521 undertrials.

The Nari Bandi Niketan in Lucknow, which has a capacity to hold 420 prisoners, currently accommodates 245. The official further said the women's prison in Bareilly has a capacity of 120 female prisoners..
