While Sandakan is widely recognized for its ecotourism attractions, such as Sepilok, Kinabatangan, and Selingan Island, Wong emphasized the need to highlight the town’s rich historical and cultural heritage. Wong pointed out that Sandakan’s town centre is home to several unique attractions that deserve greater attention in tourism packages.

“Sandakan’s town centre holds significant historical and cultural value, which is currently underrepresented in our tourism offerings,” she said. Among the attractions she mentioned were the Sandakan Heritage Trail, Creative Lane, Sandakan Wall, Sandakan Public Market, and Bukit Trig. She also highlighted the town’s culinary heritage, featuring local delicacies such as Tat UFO, Roti Kahwin, and renowned seafood dishes, which have become iconic to Sandakan.

Speaking at the closing of the Sandakan Art Bazaar Festival 2024 at Harbour Square and Sandakan Creative Lane, Wong praised the festival’s role in promoting art and culture as integral components of Sandakan’s tourism appeal. The two-day event featured various activities, including exhibitions, sales by local associations, busker performances, a classic motorcycle exhibit.
