All Creatures Great and Small: Samuel West teases future series Samuel West is set to return for the fifth season of All Creatures Great and Small which is due to air on Channel 5 later this year. Netflix UK has also just announced the first season will be made available to watch on the streamer from August 14. Samuel plays the eccentric Siegfried Farnon, the owner of Skeldale House veterinary practice, who hires James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph) as one of his countryside vets.

The 58-year-old actor comes from a famous family, with both his mother and father being well-known actors. His mother is actress Prunella Scales and his father is retired actor and presenter Timothy West. Timothy, 89, has appeared on both stage and television throughout his long career.

He has not always been in showbiz, however, as he first worked as an office furniture salesman and a recording technician. He became an assistant stage manager at the Wimbledon Theatre in 1956. His on-stage debut came in 1959 in Caught Napping, and this was followed by three seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
