Sunday, September 22, 2024 Samoa Airways is planning to reintroduce its Savaii route between Fagalii and Maota, which has been on hold for years. This move aims to facilitate business travel and urgent matters, providing an alternative to the daily crowded ships serving the two islands. This initiative is part of Samoa Airways’ commitment to serve Samoa and responds to the increasing demand from tourists and locals wishing to travel to Savaii and avoid the hour-long ferry trip.

While the airline has yet to finalise its plans and schedule, they are looking to start with three flights a week to minimize disruption to its busy schedule serving Samoa and American Samoa. Samoa Airways is also ensuring that Maota Airport is fully prepared for the route’s reopening upon government approval. The Savaii tourism operators are eagerly anticipating the reopening of air services to accommodate the influx of tourists wanting to visit Savaii.

“We are excited at the prospect of faster travel to and from Savaii being on the cards again. If approved, we hope that all sectors involved can work together to ensure its longevity and complement existing ferry services. With a travel time of just 5-10 minutes, flights will be popular with tourists and those on business to and from Upolu,” said Elisabeth Siaosi, Vice-President of the Savaii Samoa Tourism Association.
