In 2006, the world-renowned opera singer was told the devastating news he had a brain tumour the size of two golf balls after noticing his peripheral vision had become blurry.

Following a trip to LA, Russell underwent a five-hour emergency operation to remove the eight-centimetre tumour at St George's Hospital in Tooting - before overcoming a second diagnosis and surgery a year later. Appearing on the BBC show on Monday evening to talk about his new book, which details his terrifying health ordeal and return to music, Russell, 57, was shocked to find the show had tracked down the surgeon, Mr Lackett. The doctor then appeared on screen and shared how proud he was to have watched Russell's glittering career since that 'awful night', leaving the singer in tears with host Roman Kemp rushing to hand him tissues.
