Marblehead’s boys cross country team traveled to Bradley Palmer State Park Wednesday afternoon to race against Masconomet and Danvers. The Magicians (6-0) defeated Masconomet, 23-32, and Danvers, 23-36. The team was led by a first-place finish from Will Cerrutti with a time of 15:24.
He was followed in second place by Nate Assa with a time of 15:33. Jacob Szalewicz had his best race of the season, finishing fifth with a time of 16:23. They travel to the Cape Cod Fairgrounds on Saturday to compete in the Twilight Invitational before taking on Northeastern Conference foe Peabody next Wednesday.
On the girls’ side, they lost to Masconomet, but beat Danvers via a sixth-runner tie. Marri O’Connell (19:07) took first overall. Rounding out Marblehead’s top five were Evelina Beletsky (22:12), Ruby Assa (22:30), Abbie Goodwin (22:57), and Evie Becker (23:23).
“Both races could have gone either way as there were a lot of close finishes throughout,” said Marblehead coach Will Herlihy. “The scoring against Danvers was especially close. With the scores tied, it came down to the sixth-runner tie-break, which was Maren Potter (24:32).
Similarly to the Swampscott race a couple of weeks back, Maren’s finishing position offset Danvers’ fifth runner, which sent the race to a tie-break in the first place, with the senior captain also being the deciding runner.” The Lynnfield boys (4-1) hosted a tough Hamilton-Wenham team on Senior Day. The Pioneers ended up losing, 17-43, aga.
