KOTA SAMARAHAN (Sept 21): Art exhibitions in Sarawak have increased significantly in the past couple of years and artwork created by Sarawakians have increased the public’s appreciation for art, said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creativity and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting. He said this has shaped a vibrant artistic landscape.
“Our artistic scene, which began in the time of the Brooke dynasty, is now flourishing under the talents of Anak Sarawak. I firmly believe the day will come when our galleries achieve international recognition and our art museums become renowned throughout the region,” he said. Ting added the growing number of art exhibitions signified a society not only evolving in terms of economic and technological progress but also cultural sophistication.
“For this dream to be realised, we need our artists. While we can build galleries and museums, it is the work of our artists that will fill these spaces with life, meaning and beauty,” he said. Ting said this during the opening ceremony of David Chew’s solo art show at Hoan Gallery, La Promenade here on Friday.
