Just as the second season finale aired the other day, Amazon is reportedly on the verge of renewing its Prime Video fantasy epic “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” for a third season. The streamer ordered the second season years before the first season debuted with filming on it commencing two years ago – just one month after the first season premiered. Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay have been prepping the third season’s story for months, and a writers room is already assembled, but no official greenlight has been given as yet.

Prime Video held a UK Upfront presentation to advertisers in London this week with several cast members brought out for the show which has been designed with a five-season plan in mind. Studio head Jennifer Salke told buyers that season two has generated over 55 million viewers and the company expects the new season to catch up to the first which reached more than 150 million. Review scores for the second season have been higher than the first, and the season’s first few episodes have topped the Nielsen chart so far (which is only reporting the first half of the season to date).
