Slugs are the bane of all gardeners, with the pest being known to cause damage to plants, including flowers, fruit and vegetables. But there are ways to deter these animals from destroying all your hard work, and you just need one kitchen scrap. British Garden Centres have recommended using eggshells to protect your plants from slugs.

In a blog post, they wrote: "Crush up eggshells and sprinkle them around the areas where you want to protect your plants which will deter the slugs from crawling over them with their sharp edges." Gardening enthusiast have also shared the same tip, with one writing on Reddit: "We've had a really wet summer here in the UK and so many slug-related disasters. I garden organically and avoid any slug killers that could cause problems for wildlife and the environment.

"I've tried beer traps and picking but by far the best results have been with eggshells. Dried in the oven, crushed up and scattered around the bottom of the plant." They gardener then added: "I don't know if there's any science behind this apart from the slugs not liking the uncomfortableness of the sharp egg shells so avoid crossing them.

"The oven is just to dry the shells out so they can be crushed up more easily. It actually makes a big difference when it comes to how well they crush." Other green-fingered garden enthusiasts were quick to comment on the post, with one writing: "I've used this technique ever since it was taught to me as a child.

The slugs won't crawl over the sharp s.
