S ometimes it takes 200 years to see what’s been hiding in plain sight. Who knew that famous red budget box has in fact always been a natty little clutch bag? The sight of it, outside 11 Downing Street, in the hands of the first ever female chancellor of the exchequer, looked like a moment of history that finally made sense. It’s clearly always been a ladies’ fashion accessory, we just didn’t realise.

Now that we’ve seen Rachel Reeves holding it, go and have a look at pictures of Gordon Brown, George Osborne or Alistair Darling doing the same. They suddenly look downright weird. Still, the first thing Reeves will need to do is find a bigger one.
